Results are still trickling in from more remote regions, but there can be little doubt now that Indonesia has a new president.
What's more, the challenger, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, appears to have secured victory over the incumbent, Megawati Sukarnoputri, by a whopping margin.
Mrs Megawati, who came to power three years ago, seems to have been punished by voters for not delivering the reform agenda she promised.

Mr Yudhoyono's charisma may have been key

"Indonesians are really disappointed with the government's performance," said Daniel Sparingga, a political scientist at the University of Airlangga in Surabaya.
"They [the government] had their chance but they never used it. Corruption is getting worse, law enforcement is weakening and unemployment is becoming a really big problem," he said.
In fairness, Mrs Megawati did bring a period of relative stability after the turbulence of former President Suharto's downfall and the regional financial crisis which hit Indonesia especially hard.
But stability - critics would call it inertia - is no longer enough. By voting for a new president, Indonesians are demanding better.
So is Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, or SBY as he is popularly known, the man to lead this sprawling archipelago towards a brighter future? After all, both he and his vice-presidential running mate, Jusuf Kalla, were senior ministers in Megawati Sukarnoputri's government.

We don't know yet whether he can fulfil his promises or not. But if his work is just the same as the Megawati government, people will desert him

The election campaign offered few clues as to the kind of changes a Yudhoyono administration might represent.
He and Mrs Megawati both ran on secular, nationalist platforms. Both promised to boost Indonesia's underperforming economy, root out corruption and improve security. Neither gave much detail on how they would achieve all this.
Fachri Ali, a political observer, believes Indonesians made their decision on the basis of personality as much as anything else.
"You see SBY has charisma, SBY can talk and SBY knows how to express his opinions while Megawati sometimes has problems answering questions," he said.
But Mr Ali warned that the new president would now be under pressure to back up his words with action.
"We don't know yet whether he can fulfil his promises or not. But if his work is just the same as the Megawati government, people will desert him."
Corruption
Mr Yudhoyono has promised to spend the early part of his presidency focussing on corruption. So it is possible that a few high-profile characters will be brought before the courts. But probably not as high-profile as former President Suharto, who has been indicted on charges of massive misappropriation of funds, but who is deemed too ill to stand trial.

The more likely candidates are members of the financial community accused of embezzling money meant to bail out the banks in the wake of Indonesia's currency crisis. A few big fish would go a long way to showing Mr Yudhoyono means business.
But the problem is that Indonesia's justice system is itself widely perceived to be corrupt. At the very least, the courts have shown themselves to be inconsistent, bordering on incompetent. Reform is desperately needed. According to political chatter, Mr Yudhoyono may introduce some changes at the top, with a new attorney general, perhaps even a new police chief, in the offing.

Mr Yudhoyono says the economy will be a priority

For much of the presidential campaign, security didn't feature much as an issue.
But a bomb attack outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta on 9 September changed all that.
As chief security minister in Mrs Megawati's government Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was the point man in Indonesia's war on terror. He takes a tough line on militant violence, promising to hunt down those responsible.
But there has been no clear indication he will be more willing than his predecessor to tackle the roots of the problem. Anyone looking for his government to make banning the regional extremist network Jemaah Islamiah an early priority could be disappointed. Few Indonesian leaders, political or religious, are willing even to use the name in public for fear of alienating a predominantly Muslim population.
And what of the separatist violence which still flares at either end of Indonesia, in Papua and in Aceh?
Mr Yudhoyono is often credited with trying to keep the peace process in Aceh going long after it had run into the ground. On the other hand, he was also in the cabinet when the decision was taken to launch a massive military assault against the Free Aceh rebels in the hopes of using force to the end the long running conflict in the province.

Sixteen months later, the fighting goes on with no end in sight. Interestingly, in the presidential contest, Mr Yudhoyono won in Aceh by a considerable margin, so perhaps the Acehnese are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Military past
Supporters say that as a former soldier himself, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will be better placed than Mrs Megawati was to control the military, which remains a powerful force, despite having its formal political role removed.
But given the security forces' appalling human rights record, there are also people who are distinctly nervous about a retired general coming to power in Indonesia.
Here Mr Yudhoyono has a tricky balancing act to perform. He has to provide the strong leadership Indonesians are looking for, without appearing to step over the line into the authoritarianism they have fought so hard to leave behind.
Political scientist Daniel Sparingga thinks Mr Yudhoyono should impress himself on the military early on.
"What he has to do is create a new network, change people in the military and put in people he can trust and work with," he said. "That way it'll be easier to control the military, but it's not going to be easy."
The next president will also have to work with parliament, and here Mr Yudhoyono could be frustrated. His Democratic Party has only 8% of the seats, in a parliament dominated by Golkar, the party of former President Suharto, and Mrs Megawati's PDIP party.
"An SBY government could have a lot of problems if it doesn't get enough support from parliament," said Fachri Ali. "There are many policies, like changing the chief of police for instance, that will need the backing of parliament, so SBY is going to have to work on that."
The challenges facing the next leader of Indonesia are many and varied. But at least Mr Yudhoyono knows that he was chosen by the people. He has a huge mandate for change, and the people who voted for him expect him to honour that.

European debut for '$100 laptop'

They said they were determined to work together to achieve "needed reforms" in the world's financial systems.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said he hopes US President-elect Barack Obama will help rebuild the strained relations between their two countries.
In a speech in Washington, Mr Medvedev said that a new US administration might be able to address what he described as a lack of "necessary mutual trust".
He said he wanted to meet Mr Obama soon after he takes office in January.
The Russian leader also indicated that Russia might accept a compromise over a planned US missile shield in Europe.
Two weeks ago, he said Moscow would neutralise the possible deployment by the US of a tracking radar in the Czech Republic and missile interceptors in Poland by stationing short-range missiles in its western enclave of Kaliningrad.
The US insists the shield is incapable of threatening Russia and is designed solely to guard against missile attacks by "rogue states".
'Encouraged by signals'
In his speech to the Council on Foreign Relations following the G20 summit on the global economic crisis in Washington, President Medvedev welcomed the election of Mr Obama on 4 November.
"US-Russian relations lack the necessary mutual trust. We pin such hopes on the arrival of the new US administration," he explained.

On Friday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned Mr Medvedev about deploying missiles in Kaliningrad, which borders Poland.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin has announced that Mr Medvedev will visit Cuba as part of a Latin American tour this month.

Mystery of Great Pyramid 'solved'

A French architect claims to have solved the mystery of how Egypt's Great Pyramid was built.
Jean-Pierre Houdin said the 4,500-year-old pyramid, just outside Cairo, was built using an inner ramp to lift the massive stones into place.
Other theories contend that the three million stones - each 2.5 tons - were pushed into place using external ramps.
Mr Houdin studied the problem for eight years and used a computer model to illustrate how he thought it was done.
"This is better than the other theories, because it is the only theory that works," said Mr Houdin as he unveiled his theory with a 3D computer simulation.
He believes workers used an outer ramp to build the first 43 metres (47 yards) then constructed an inner ramp to carry stones to the apex of the 137m pyramid.
The pyramid was built to house the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu, also known as Cheops.
The Grand Gallery inside the pyramid, another source of mystery for Egyptologists, housed a giant counter-weight used to hoist five 60 ton granite beams into position above the King's Chamber.

"This goes against both main existing theories," Egyptologist Bob Brier told Reuters news agency after Mr Houdin explained his hypothesis.
"I've been teaching them myself for 20 years but deep down I know they're wrong."
Mr Houdin said that an outer ramp all the way to the top of the pyramid would have blocked sight lines and left little room to work, while a long, frontal ramp would have used up too much stone.
Further confusing matters, there is little evidence left of external ramps at the site of the Great Pyramid.
Mr Houdin said the pyramid could have been built by 4,000 people using his technique instead of 100,000, as postulated by other theorists.
The architect is now assembling a team to verify his theory on site using radars and other non-invasive means.

Put your site in Web Directories, those are just like phonebooks but with use to your website. Find ones that have good Page Rank, which is ranked from 0 to 10. So a Page Rank 3 or higher will give you a decent backlink. Also to achieve a more eminence link there are more steps to follow. You have to find a website with a good niche; niche is defined in the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) world as a category in what your website falls into. Such as Google would have a Search Engine niche, MTV has a music and entertainment niche, Comedy Central has a comedian type of niche and so on and so forth. Next you have to do some research on the type of link you are receiving. This includes the four golden rules: pagerank, indexed pages, backlinks, and niche. It is mandatory if you want a quality link to find a website that has mastered those qualities. If you get a backlink that has a good PR but no indexed pages, and not the same niche, then there is not much use to it. If you have a backlink with indexed pages, but not the same niche and no pagerank, then it is not worth it. So it is necessary to find a website that has a link with those four qualities mentioned above. This is also helpful in the marketing world. People will try to sell links for a cheap price, and say they are quality, but without doing a background check (A good tool to use is Iwebtool) they might be just giving a poor link for a cheap price. New GDP Numbers Strongest Signal Yet The Country Has "Hurtled Into Recession"

WASHINGTON — Scared and out of money, Americans stopped buying everything from cars to corn flakes in the July-September quarter, ratcheting back spending by the largest amount in 28 years and jolting the national economy into what could be the most painful recession in decades.

With retailers bracing for a grim holiday buying season, the economy isn't just slowing; it's actually shrinking, the government confirmed Thursday. It reported that the nation's gross domestic product declined at an annual rate of 0.3 percent in the year's third quarter and consumers' disposable income took its biggest drop on record.

In simpler words, "The train went off the tracks," said Brian Bethune, economist at IHS global Insight.

Wall Street took comfort in the fact that it wasn't even worse. The Dow Jones industrials rose 190 points.

But economists say tougher times are still ahead. Believing consumers are cutting back even more right now, they predict a much larger economic decline _ anywhere from a 1 to 2 percent rate _ during the current October-December period. That would meet a classic definition of a recession _ two straight quarters of shrinking GDP.

Not that there's any real doubt now.

Clobbered by pink slips, shrinking nest eggs and falling home values _ consumers are holding ever tighter to their wallets. The new report said Americans' disposable income fell at an annual rate of 8.7 percent in the quarter, the largest in records dating back to 1947.

The dismal news came just days before the nation picks the next president. Whether Democrat Barack Obama or Republican John McCain wins the White House, he will inherit a deeply troubled economy and a record-high budget deficit that could cramp his spending plans.
Each side said the new figures supported its political case.

"The decline in GDP didn't happen by accident _ it is a direct result of the Bush administration's trickle down, Wall Street first, Main Street last policies that John McCain has embraced for the last eight years," Obama said. He pledged to provide tax relief to middle class families and help people facing foreclosure.

Pointing to the economy's sad state, Doug Holtz-Eakin, senior policy adviser for the McCain campaign, shot back that "Barack Obama would accelerate this dangerous course." McCain said his tax cuts, free-trade policies and help to struggling homeowners would help turn things around.

More than in recent recessions, consumers _ the lifeblood of the economy _ are bearing the brunt of the country's housing, banking and other ailments. The third-quarter decline in their spending was the first in 17 years, and the 3.1 percent annualized cutback was staggering _ the most since the spring of 1980 when the country was in the grip of what some call the worst downturn since the Great Depression.

Walloped by such a huge pullback, the economy toppled into negative territory.

The latest reading on GDP, which measures the value of all goods produced within the United States, showed a rapid turn from the 2.8 percent growth rate logged in the second quarter. The new figure was the worst since the 1.4 percent rate of decline in the third quarter of 2001, when the nation was suffering through its most recent recession.

Democrats on Capitol Hill are pushing for another economic stimulus package and are weighing whether to hold a lame duck session before the new president takes office.

Under attack from Democrats and Republicans alike, the White House defended giving billions of bailout dollars to banks that now are rewarding shareholders and executives _ or even buying other banks _ rather than making loans to consumers and businesses.

Ed Lazear, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, said the government is keeping close tabs on banks' use of the money, but he also said normal activities such as paying performance-related salaries or distributing dividends are allowed under the law Congress passed.

White House press secretary Dana Perino said that "not only rich people get dividend payments," which can form a significant portion of income for retirees and mutual funds.

A collapse of the housing market and locked-up lending have produced the worst financial crisis to hit the country in more than 70 years.

To cushion the fallout, the Fed slashed interest rates on Wednesday by half a percentage point to 1 percent, a level seen only once before in the last half century.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has warned that the country's economic weakness could last for some time _ even if the government's unprecedented $700 billion financial bailout package and other steps do succeed in getting financial and credit markets to operate more normally.

"As of now, most forecasts indicate that we will experience a serious recession, perhaps comparable to the recession of the early 1980s, but nothing like the Great Depression," said Simon Johnson, former chief economist to the International Monetary Fund and senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. During the 1980-1982 recession, unemployment topped 10 percent.

Other analysts, including Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com, predicts the downturn will be much more severe than the 2001 and 1990-1991 recessions but not as bad _ in terms of unemployment or lost growth _ as the 1980s one.

The unemployment rate, now at 6.1 percent, could hit 8 percent or higher next year.

The Labor Department said Thursday that new claims for unemployment benefits last week held steady at 479,000, an elevated figure that continued to point to troubles in the jobs market.

In the third quarter, consumers cut back on purchases of cars, furniture, household appliances, clothes and almost everything else.

Businesses cut back, too, trimming spending on equipment and software at a 5.5 percent pace, the most since the first quarter of 2002. And home builders slashed spending at a 19.1 percent pace, marking the 11th straight quarterly cutback.

Slower growth for U.S. exports _ reflecting less demand from overseas buyers who are coping with their own economic problems _ also factored into the weak GDP report. Exports grew at a 5.9 percent pace in the third quarter, less than half the second quarter's 12.3 percent rate.

1 million flee Congo fighting, U.N. says

(CNN) -- About 1 million people have been forced to flee because of fighting between rebel and government forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the U.N. refugee agency said Friday, adding that it was investigating reports of camps being looted and torched.

Children eat bread and porridge at a camp for displaced people 12 kilometers north of Goma in Congo.

A rebel spokesman said they were keeping to a cease-fire so aid can reach displaced Congolese.

Babou Amane, deputy spokesman for the National Congress for the Defense of the People, said rebel forces had retreated to about 9 miles (15 kilometers) north of the city of Goma to create a "humanitarian corridor."

Despite a rebel cease-fire declared late Wednesday, security in Congo's North Kivu province was tenuous, with many aid organizations refusing or reluctant to venture out to help the homeless, authorities said.

About 50 medical personnel from Medecins sans Frontieres can move throughout the area relatively unobstructed and supplies are getting in, said Marie-Noelle Rodrigue, the agency's local emergency coordinator.

"Security is a concern, of course," Rodrigue said from Goma, the provincial capital. "For the moment, we have not been stopped by anybody."

Thousands of displaced residents are on the move and Medecins sans Frontieres has mobile clinics dispensing water and any other needed aid, Rodrigue said late Friday.

"We're trying to move with the people," Rodrigue said. "We're setting up mobile clinics where ever they are."

There have been some isolated cases of cholera but no epidemics or other major health concerns, Rodrigue said.

"For the moment, it is still under control," the 40-year-old nurse said.

David Miliband, the foreign minister of Britain, and his French counterpart, Bernard Kouchner, were heading to Congo and neighboring Rwanda on Friday, their offices said. France holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, which is considering its options, officials have said.

In addition, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asked Alain Leroy, the undersecretary-general for peacekeeping operations, to travel to the region, the organization said.
European Union Commissioner Louis Michel was in Kinshasa, the Congolese capital, on Friday and obtained "verbal agreement" from Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Congo President Joseph Kabila to attend an emergency summit on the crisis to be held "in Nairobi [Kenya] under auspices of the United Nations," EU spokesman John Clancy said.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said it was investigating reports that some camps for displaced persons had been "forcibly emptied, looted and burned," according to a written statement.

In a written statement, the U.N. High Commissioner of Refugees spokesman Ron Redmond said Friday afternoon, "UNHCR staff in Goma this morning reported the situation calm but tense. Our office is open and our people are working, but security restrictions on movement remain tight."

He said rebels controlled Rutshuru, where UNHCR has an office. Rutshuru is 90 kilometers (56 miles) north of Goma, the provincial capital.

Redmond said the UNHCR was trying to verify "disturbing reports" from "humanitarian partners" about attacks on the camps near Rutshuru.

"We are extremely concerned about the fate of some 50,000 displaced people living in these camps, which include the UNHCR-administered sites of Dumez, Nyongera and Kasasa as well as several makeshift settlements," he said.

Rebel leader General Laurent Nkunda said Thursday that he ordered a cease-fire for his forces because he wants start work with the U.N. mission in Congo, known by its French acronym MONUC, to allow people back to their homes.

"We are respecting our cease-fire. ... We are waiting for the response [to the corridor offer] from the government and from MONUC, the U.N. forces," Nkunda said. "We want to have an agenda that we can discuss political issues with the government."

Nkunda, a Tutsi, has repeatedly blamed the Congolese government for failing to protect the Tutsi tribe from Rwandan Hutu militia in Congo. Hutu rebels have been active in the jungles of eastern Congo since Rwanda's 1994 genocide, according to the United Nations.

The United Nations estimates that during the 100 days of the genocide in Rwanda, the Hutu majority killed 800,000 Tutsis and and moderate Hutus.

The top U.S. diplomat for Africa said Friday that she was encouraged that the deadly conflict won't grow into "something that looks like genocide."

Assistant Secretary of State Jendayi Frazer spoke to CNN International by phone from Kigali, Rwanda, Congo's neighbor, where she planned to meet Saturday with Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

Frazer, who visited Thursday with Congo President Joseph Kabila, was making diplomatic rounds to deliver a U.S. message: "We understand the need for the Rwandans and the Congolese to work together to try to end the human crisis that's unfolded in North Kivu, as well as to cooperate together to address the negative forces in the eastern Congo."

One of the negative forces, she said, is the National Congress for the Defense of the People rebel force led by Nkunda, which fought government forces for four days until a cease-fire was declared late Wednesday.

Frazer said she would impress upon Kagame the need for continued cooperation between Rwanda and Kabila's government.

"Eastern Congo is very, very unstable right now. ... There have been attacks and counterattacks between rebels and the Congo military," she said.

Asked about the possible danger that the rebels could overrun Goma, Frazer said tensions seemed to be lessening.

"But I am growing confident that both President Kabila and President Kagame have been speaking to each other.

"They've exchanged envoys. ... They are engaged in the type of discussions that will be necessary to prevent such an attack on Goma as well as some type of ethnic reprisal that could lead to something that looks like genocide."

Frazer said the United States also recognizes the limitations of MONUC, whose soldiers have lent support to Congolese troops.

The United States has said for some time that they need more troops and specialized forces, even for a limited time while diplomatic measures are being pursued, she said.
On Thursday, MONUC spokesman Kevin Kennedy said U.N. troops, numbering a few hundred, were struggling to keep the peace in Goma, a city of about 1 million people, and the surrounding countryside.

Thousands flee DR Congo fighting

About 80,000 people have been displaced by fighting in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo this year, according to UN officials.

They say nearly half have fled Ituri region in the last four days.

Ituri is highly unstable, despite the presence of UN peacekeepers and a peace agreement designed to end Congo's five-year civil war.

The UN has warned of a humanitarian crisis in the region.

Officials from the organisation say many of the newly displaced have travelled long distances on foot, taking with them only what they can carry.

UN peacekeepers have deployed in three new towns in recent weeks to try to protect civilians from attack.

Aid agencies are providing food, water and medical care in the areas safe enough to access.

The displacement follows renewed clashes between militias from the Hema and Lendu ethnic groups.

These groups have continued to fight for control over Ituri's natural resources, despite the official end of Congo's civil war two years ago.

Congo's neighbours, Rwanda and Uganda, have been accused in the past of using the local militias as proxies, to further their own interests in the region.

For Ituri's civilians, it means the nightmare continues.

Up to 50,000 have been killed since 1999, and rape is still widely used as a weapon of war.

The UN estimates that within the provincial capital Bunia alone there are 50 new cases of sexual violence every week.

McCain Attacks Obama's Patriotism

John McCain unveiled a new attack on Barack Obama's patriotism Saturday, jumping all over - and taking out of context - remarks made yesterday in which the Democratic nominee said the Iowa Caucuses vindicated his faith in the American public.

Campaigning in Springfield, Virginia, McCain told the crowd that he had always had faith in his country and - dinging his opponent - claimed that the United States "has never had to prove anything to me."

For all the politics at play here - certainly, the GOP has won many elections painting their opponents as not loving of country - there is much to quibble with.

For starters, at various points during this campaign, McCain - whose surrogates and vice president have often gone after Obama on this front - has confirmed that he believes Obama to be a patriot. Moreover, the Republican nominee at one point in his life made comments similar to those offered by the Illinois Democrat.

Speaking about his experience in Vietnam, he described his time as a POW as one that tested and affirmed his love of country.

"I think it makes you a better person," he told Fox News' Sean Hannity in March 2008. "Obviously, it makes you love America. I really didn't love America until I was deprived of her company, but probably the most important thing about it, Sean, is that I was privileged to have the opportunity to serve in the company of heroes."

Past statements aside, if one actually takes a look at what Obama said, and what he has said before, it is hard to interpret in anyway that he doubted the United States. Just look at the sentences before his "faith" remark, in which he lavishly praises the American people, who he "knew" were "decent" and "generous."

"I had confidence in the people of Iowa because I knew that the American people are a decent people and a generous people, willing to work hard and sacrifice for future generations," the Senator told a crowd in Des Moines on Friday. "No where was that truer than here in Iowa."

Those remarks, as the Obama camp pointed out Saturday afternoon, are almost identical to ones made by the Senator even before the Iowa caucus.

"Most of all, I believed in the power of the American people to be the real agents of change in this country - because we are not as divided as our politics suggests; because we are a decent, generous people willing to work hard and sacrifice for future generations; and I was certain that if we could just mobilize our voices to challenge the special interests that dominate Washington and challenge ourselves to reach for something better, there was no problem we couldn't solve - no destiny we couldn't fulfill. Ten months later, Iowa, you have vindicated that faith."

There were no screams of treason then. Rather those comments were interpreted for what they were: Obama thanking the Iowa public for exhibiting the characteristics that he believes make America, America.

"It's pathetic that John McCain would take a statement Barack Obama has been making for a year about his faith in the American people and distort it to attack his patriotism," spokesman Bill Burton said in response to McCain's attack Saturday. "Sadly, this is what we've come to expect from a desperate, dishonorable campaign that will say anything in a failed attempt to win this election."

Obama cushions lead over McCain in state

When it comes to balancing the budget, lowering taxes and achieving American independence from foreign oil, Michigan voters have a healthy skepticism on whether Barack Obama would fulfill his campaign promises in his first term.

But it hasn’t cost him their support.

Obama leads Republican John McCain among Michiganders who say they are certain to vote, 53%-37%, with two days left in the campaign, according to the Detroit Free Press/Local 4 Michigan Poll.

Significant numbers of voters say Obama has won them over with his judgment and how he makes them feel about America’s future.

And if voters are skeptical about Obama’s ability to deliver on some promises, they share the same concerns about McCain — while Obama continues to get a bump from supporters who think he’d be best able to address the nation’s economic troubles.

He also gets high marks from his supporters as being likely to reform health care.

“It’s time to get ourselves out of some messes,” said Martha Aldrich, a 64-year-old Dearborn resident who usually votes Republican but is backing Obama. Of Obama, she added, “He’s going to be a great president because he’s really concerned about the American people.”

The poll of 616 likely Michigan voters was conducted Tuesday through Friday by Selzer & Co. of Des Moines, Iowa. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

It shows Obama building on what was a 13-point lead in Michigan in late September.

Shortly after that poll, McCain decamped from Michigan, essentially conceding the state to Obama. Neither has visited since. Until then, Michigan was widely seen as a battleground state, offering McCain a shot at picking up a state that has backed Democratic candidates for president in the last four elections.

The latest poll shows Obama has built leads over McCain in every part of the state except the northern Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula, where the Arizona senator has an edge. Obama also leads among every age bracket, holds a 48%-to-37% edge among the key voting bloc of self-described independent voters, and is in a virtual dead heat among white voters.

His supporters see him as a force for great — and positive — change. A majority of his supporters expect sweeping, positive changes on everything from the Iraq war to making financial institutions more stable to job growth to foreign relations.

Meanwhile, McCain supporters seem more pessimistic, with fewer than half of them believing there will be major positive changes in U.S. relations with its enemies or the stability of financial institutions rocked by the global credit crisis.

His supporters also aren’t hopeful they will see major positive changes to their taxes compared with Obama’s backers. Forty-three percent of Obama supporters say he will probably lower taxes, 23% say he probably won’t be able to. For McCain, 27% of his supporters say he will probably lower taxes, 47% say he probably won’t.

Most Obama supporters say they believe he would probably reform health care; a majority of McCain’s supporters say their candidate would be unlikely to reform health care — even though both have announced major plans to do so.

There also were indications that the tone that the hotly contested campaign has taken is working against McCain, with more than three-quarters of Obama supporters calling it a reason for their decision to back Obama, the junior senator from Illinois.

There were bright spots for McCain.

For instance, he holds a 49%-41% edge in metro Detroit outside of Wayne County — but inside Wayne County, which includes Detroit, Obama leads 74%-20%, easily cancelling out McCain’s advantage in the rest of the region.

McCain also leads easily among white men and within the margin of error among Catholic and upper income voters. The pool of voters who are not even leaning toward a candidate is just 7%, and 7% of those who chose a candidate said they could still change their decision.

While the economy has worked to Obama’s advantage, there are those who feel McCain is the better pick on that topic, too.

Nicole Soucie, a 35-year-old stay-at-home mother of four who lives in the Grand Rapids suburb of Jenison, said she disagrees with Obama’s plan to tax higher wage earners. “They work for the American dream but I feel in a sense they get punished for it,” she said.

Patrick Smith, a 38-year-old mechanical engineer from White Lake Township, said his support of McCain is more “a vote against Obama and his lack of defense of the unborn,” but it still scores for the Republican — who will be looking to pick up support from evangelicals and social conservatives on Election Day.

McCain leads 55%-35% among evangelicals in Michigan.

Meanwhile, for all the optimism among Obama supporters, there are worries, too — concerns the nation may not be ready to elect a black president and, if it does, what could happen.

Harold Luke, 55, of Detroit is at home on disability. He says the possible election of a fellow black man makes him proud yet anxious for his safety.

But he thinks Obama would do well.

“He knows,” Luke said, “everybody is watching him and waiting for him to screw up.”
